What is Google Business Profile?
Google Business Profile (GBP), formerly known as Google My Business, is a free tool that lets you manage how your business appears on Google Search and Google Maps. If you've ever searched for a restaurant or shop nearby and seen a panel with photos, reviews, opening hours, and a phone number pop up on the right side of the screen, that's a Google Business Profile in action.
For small business owners, it's one of the most powerful and underused tools available, and it costs nothing to set up.
What does it show?
When someone searches for your business or a service you offer nearby, your GBP can display:
- Your business name, address, and phone number
- Opening hours
- Customer reviews and your responses
- Photos of your business
- A link to your website
- Questions and answers from customers
All of this appears directly on Google before the person even visits your website. That's why getting your profile right matters so much.
Why it matters for small businesses
Most small businesses compete locally. Your customers are people in your area searching for exactly what you offer. Google Business Profile puts you in front of those people at the exact moment they're looking, which is as good as it gets in marketing.
A well-optimized profile can drive calls, directions requests, and website visits without running a single ad. Many businesses see results from GBP much faster than from traditional SEO efforts. If you're wondering how long SEO typically takes to show results, GBP is often the exception. It can generate visibility within days of being set up and verified.
It's not just a listing, it's a signal
Google also uses your Business Profile to assess credibility. The consistency of your information, the volume and quality of reviews, how often you post updates, and whether you respond to customers all influence how prominently Google shows your business in local results.
How to get started
Go to google.com/business, sign in with a Google account, and either claim your existing listing or create a new one. Google will verify your business, usually by sending a postcard or via phone, and once verified, your profile goes live.
It's one of the highest-impact, lowest-effort things a small business owner can do for their online visibility.
