What is Keyword Difficulty?

Keyword difficulty is a metric that estimates how hard it would be to rank on the first page of Google for a specific keyword. Most SEO tools like Ahrefs, Semrush, and Moz express it as a score from 0 to 100. The higher the score, the more competitive the keyword and the harder it is to rank for without significant authority and backlinks behind your site.

For small business owners and beginners, it is one of the most practical filters to apply when deciding which keywords are actually worth targeting.

Myths Worth Clearing Up

The biggest myth is that low difficulty automatically means easy traffic. A keyword can have a difficulty score of 5 and still drive zero meaningful visitors because nobody is actually searching for it. Difficulty and search volume are two separate things and need to be evaluated together, not in isolation.
