What is SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of improving your website's content, structure, and online presence so it ranks higher on search engines like Google. When someone searches for something you offer, SEO is what makes your page show up in those results without paying for ads.
It works by helping search engines understand what your pages are about, trust your website as a reliable source, and match your content to what people are actually searching for. Done consistently, SEO builds long-term visibility that grows over time rather than stopping the moment a budget runs out.
How SEO Works
Google sends bots to crawl your website, read your content, and store it in its index. When someone searches, Google scans that index and ranks the most relevant, trustworthy pages.
Three things decide your ranking:
- Relevance — Does your content actually answer what the user is searching for?
- Authority — Do other websites link to you? Does Google trust your site?
- Experience — Is your site fast, mobile-friendly, and easy to use?
Get all three right, and you rank. Ignore any one of them, and you'll wonder why nothing moves.
Types of SEO
On-Page SEO — Optimizing what's on your page: title tags, headings, content quality, keywords, internal links, and URL structure. This is what most beginners start with.
Technical SEO — The behind-the-scenes stuff: site speed, crawlability, indexing, mobile-friendliness, and fixing errors that stop Google from reading your site properly.
Off-Page SEO — Building your site's reputation outside your website, mainly through backlinks — other sites linking to yours as a trusted source.
Local SEO — Helping local businesses appear in Google Maps and "near me" searches. If you run a business in Kathmandu and want people nearby to find you, this is your priority.
Why It Matters
Paid ads stop the moment you stop paying. SEO keeps working.
A page that ranks well today can bring consistent traffic for months or even years — without spending a rupee on ads. That's the real value of SEO: sustainable visibility built on relevance and trust.
It takes time. It takes consistency. But when it works, it compounds.
