What is Keyword Cannibalization?

Keyword cannibalization happens when two or more pages on your website target the same keyword and end up competing against each other in search results. Instead of one strong page ranking well, you have multiple weaker pages splitting Google's attention and diluting the ranking potential of each.

Google can only confidently rank one page per site for a given query. When it finds multiple pages targeting the same term, it has to guess which one you actually want to rank. It often guesses wrong, or simply rotates between them, which means none of your pages ever build the consistent authority needed to rank strongly.

It is a surprisingly common problem, especially for sites that have been publishing content for a while without a clear keyword strategy. Two blog posts covering slightly different angles on the same topic, a service page and a blog post both targeting the same phrase, or multiple location pages with near-identical content can all trigger cannibalization.

The solution is usually to consolidate overlapping content into a single stronger page or clearly differentiate the intent behind each one. Getting your keyword research process right from the start is the most effective way to avoid this problem entirely.
